Hardys and Hansons
Brewery Closure Campaigners from Greasley and District Civic Society
were today devastated by the news that after 170 years brewing is to cease at Hardys and Hansons’ brewery in The future of the brewery has been a matter of
speculation since news of the take over by Bury St Edmunds-based brewers
Greene King earlier this year. The new
owners have now announced that brewing will cease by the end of the year
after which the site will be used purely as a distribution centre. The news of the end of brewing at the Kimberley
Brewery has come as a blow to the Civic Society, which, alongside the
Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), has conducted a vigorous campaign for Greene
King to maintain the brewery as a going concern. Together they have attempted to influence
the new owners with petitions, publicity, meetings and a post card campaign
but sadly to no avail. Society Chairman, Mark Leivers, commented, “The
brewery is a vital part of our local heritage and economy and we have fought
hard to maintain it. We are naturally hugely disappointed by Greene King’s
decision and hope that any future developments to the site will respect the
heritage of our area.” Click here for Greene

314
Dwellings by Bloor and Radleigh Bloor
and Radleigh plan to build 314 houses next to a crudely closed landfill site.
Our meeting to discuss this matter was very well attended and highlighted
current health problems being created by the site, problems in the ground
surveys performed so far, damage to the natural environment and flaws in the
plans. Read more. The application has now been
withdrawn, but there is every chance that a resubmission will take place. |
